Freemium games that offer random shopping like chests and little bundles are in Apple’s sights. The manufacturer is not at all pleased with the “go-all” policy of some game producers. There have been changes in the App Store’s Guideline, and free games are the main ones affected.

As of December 21, the company that owns games with purchases of random items, must inform what is being bought and the chances that the user has to take a rare item.

Here’s the snippet that was added to the App Store’s Guideline

Apps offering “loot boxes” or other mechanisms that provide randomized virtual items for purchase must disclose the odds of receiving each type of item to customers prior to purchase.

Applications that offer “loot boxes” or other mechanisms that provide randomly-ordered virtual items for purchase should disclose the chances of receiving each type of item to customers prior to purchase.

    What changes?

With this, not only games like Clash Royale, Hearthstone and even Modern Combat Versus will be affected, but thousands upon thousands of freemium games as well .

It is worth remembering that this measure is only for iOS. Google has yet to comment on the case. But probably many games get updated with the changes also in Android.

    The controversy of “loot boxes”

Earlier this year, China’s Ministry of Culture released new rules governing loot boxes. These rules required developers to explicitly reveal the likelihood of specific items, forcing games like Dota 2 and League of Legends to reveal the exact numbers behind each opening of items.

But Apple’s new policy marks the first time a major US company has demanded similar disclosure from developers.

The confusion over loot boxes in the West began in November, when the Belgian government ruled out games with a “random box” system and were therefore banned from the country. The controversy was reinforced by the in-game shopping system for consoles and PC, Star Wars Battlefront 2.

    “And the Clash Royale?”

Interestingly, Clash Royale recently received an update that added the “Lucky Chest”. This new chest allows the user to see what is being received from the game. In addition, Supercell introduced the “Lightning Bolt”. Already this chest has a mechanic that allows you to choose something else to receive, if you do not like the first selection.

But these changes may not be enough. Through the Apple Guideline, all chests need to have a “Lucky Chest” system. So it’s clear that Supercell was not “good from nothing”. She was forced to make these changes.

Needless to say that who wins with this are the players, who will acquire fairer mechanisms where you will really know what you may be earning.
